Can the 3.6l v6 safely be turbo charged? I was talking to a guy who says that if the motor is not factory turbo charged you will blow it up if you add one. This sounds a little suspicious to me, and while I am not thinking of doing this, I am now wondering if he is full of it. Any information that is available would be appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.

Any engine can be boosted with a turbo.

The strength of the internals is what determined how much boost the engine can handle.

For perspective, the original Saturn S Series owners wood turbo their vehicles themselves. But when they did, they found out by trial and error that you can put about 7 lb of boost on the stock engine. Any higher than that for any length of time would eventually blow the engine.

People who wanted to run higher boost would replace stock internals with stronger parts that could handle the additional stress. And they had to be very careful to construct their own fuel maps such that they didn't end up running too lean, which creates too high of a combustion temperature which eventually destroys things.

So there is no one universal answer. It depends on the engine construction as to how much boost you can run on the stock engine until you destroy it.
