    97 SW1, 126,000 miles. 5 speed manual.

Shifter cable broke in a parking lot about 5 - 6 weeks ago. Got repaired and
shifted ok for 2 -3 weeks. Now can't downshift into 2nd gear. Must use
    1st or
3rd. It's like 2nd gear isn't lining up to enable the downshift. Goes up
    ok from
    1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th, but not down into 2nd.

Does the shifter cable need to be adjusted??

    Thanks for any help.

It sounds like the U shaped clip holding one of the shifter cables to the
transmission housing came off. Not where it actually hooks to the transmission,
but farther back, on the case, the cables are anchored in place with U shaped
clips. Look down behind the battery and follow the cables back and you can see
where they get anchored on the trans case(you may have to remove the air pipe
    to see it though).
