heat/air regulator disk is VERY hard to turn, fear it will break. 106K miles, had car for 22 years, love it, want to keep. Senior lady, do not want to change vehicles. What to do? Repair too costly?

22 years tends to dry out plastic parts, making them brittle to breaking when the slightest force is applied during repairs. Repair shops may turn away from these types of repairs and/or charge ridiculous rates whether they can repair it or not (hourly labor rates). If you can remove fascia and disassemble some screws holding the hvac control panel, you may be able to carefully pull it away but beware of hard wire cables connecting dials/knobs to levers on the hvac box. Disconnecting them can allow hvac control removal to examine for free movement of dials/knobs. Cleaning off years of dust buildup and greasing where necessary may help. Exercising the cable to hvac levers may reveal whether or not internal door panels bind. This is diy repairs.

Not sure OP is up for that level of involvement.
Do you have any kids/grandkids/other family members with experience working on cars? They could likely follow a YouTube video on the removal and maintenance work to bring it back to reasonable operation. Or possibly by a used replacement part off ebay that functions better.
