rear brake adustment weirdness

  1. The brakes on my 95 SW1 were feeling a bit low, so while rotating the tires
this weekend I pulled the drums to take a look.

The shoes looked good, but I noticed the following: On each brake backing
plate is a slot on one side to allow one to reach in with a brake adjusting
tool to spin the star wheel. However, on each side the starwheel expander
was installed with the starwheel on the OTHER side, as if the expander was
simply installed backwards. But along with the starwheel is the hardware
which attaches to the shoe to flip the notches on the wheel when the
automatic adjuster does it's thing. According to the picture in the Haynes
manual, the hardware is installed correctly. (One can tell in the pictures
that the wheel shown is the driver side due to the suspension parts.

It seems to me that the backing plates must be on the wrong side
    respectively.

Has anyone else run into this?
