Problem fastening front air filter cover clip?

The car is new to me. 2002 L100. 4 cyl. I opened the box to examine the filter. Filter was fine. I also removed the box experimentally and put it back. Now I am able to fasten the rear clip but not the front one. I am not sure it was fastened in the first place but I think it was. I am not sure whether the clip is bent (couldn't have happened while I had the car) or something else. I have been driving it with one clip, but considering the air is taken off the top, any leakage would go into the engine.
Is there some obvious answer or should I try to flatten out the clip some? Much appreciated.

Today I took the box out completely and saw what was what. I did have to adjust the clip somewhat but eventually got it together and right. Very awkward setup, but get I'll get used to it.
