Please HELP with my 2001 Saturn L200 Problem

Discussion in 'Saturn L-series' started by Newsgroupquestions, Oct 9, 2004.

  1. My Saturn L200 has 51000 miles on it and it is an automatic. It has
the 2.2 Liter engine. Between 1 and 3 thousands RPMs the car
functions very normally. BUT when I give it more gas then usual it
starts to climb into the 4 and 5 thousands then the car shuttered
hidiously and actually starts to loose speed. You can hear the engine
whine up but the car is very VERY sluggish. I think it is a
    transmission problem, possibly torque converter.

If anyone could help me with this problem that would be great!

    Thank you,
    Adam

Does sound like a transmission problem.
Have you checked the fluid level? Not sure if the L200 trany is the same as
my Lw300. On mine, there is no dipstick and it is a bit of a nuisance to
check. I think that the philosophy was that if it isn't leaking, should be
    good for 100K miles.

I recall that there was a 'recommended check' (not bad enough to be a
recall) for the torque converter. Check with Saturn service and see if you
are part of this. Either way sounds like you need service before serious
    damage is done.

Just a note about transmission service, one of the best shops in my area
looks like a hole in the wall. You wouldn't even give it a second look
except that they do all the work for the City vehicles, police, ambulances
and snow plows. I found them a while back by asking several service stations
who they send all their transmission work to. Nice folks that stand by their
work and do it at a reasonable price. I had a Chrysler minivan transmission
that needed a total rebuild. Pulled the unit myself and dropped it off.
Total cost $400 including a new torque converter (plus my own time to R&R).
No need to consider one of the big franchises, they are often over-priced.
Big shout-out to Sal's Transmissions of Harrison, NY
