passlock switch /BCM 2004 Ion

My son has a 2004 Ion .Has the Lock light illuminated on instument panel when trying to start . Car will not start. From this forum i learned that the passlock switch may be defective and is preventing gas from getting to engine. The switch must be chsnged out and tbe Body Control Module (BCM) must be reprogrammed by a dealer according to one person . No way i can afford dealer shop rates of 155$ per hour. Any one out there done this at home ,or is there any one who has had a non dealer shop do this repair? Never wrenched on one of these but i'm going to have to learn . Any help or advice welcome.
