I have a LW300 wagon. Currently will not start. Dealer wants $3000 to change the pass code lock sensor new tumbler new key and reprogramming. I replaced the BCM a while back with an ebay one, everything has been working fine for almost a year, although I did not have the key fobs reprogrammed.

The other day I drove car home and parked it. The next day nothing, no power at all. No dome light, radio, etc. Disconnected the battery and reconnected and it won't start. Dealer says they got it started but after a few starts it reverts back and will not start.

Is this something I can fix at home? Is the dealer the only one who can do this work and reprogram? They say that changing the pass code lock sensor may not be the issue by itself may need the BCM changed too for another $1000.

Is it even worth it, are these vehicles problematic? My Gma bought the car new in 2003 has fairly low mileage. Maybe around 90k. If I pay the money to fix it will something else give out?
I have a 93 SL1 and this thing is still going!

    In Los Angeles area.

    Thank you!!

It is a real possibility that the BCM you recently installed has failed. However, that should not kill 100% responsive any part of the vehicle. The shop says they got it started which means they were able to do the passlock security relearn, but it did not hold in the BCM OR The pest lock sensor in the ignition switch is worn out and is not sensing the key consistently.

This is not a $3,000 job. It's probably 2 hours of work Max with the correct tools.

I would replace the ignition switch pass lock sensor first. This will either solve your issues or it won't. Should be about the cost of an ignition cylinder plus labor which is not high for that vehicle. They will then do a pass lock reset and give the car back to you. If it continues to randomly become unresponsive, then it is likely the BCM. L series BCMs or and are horribly problematic in terms of becoming corrupted with respect to programming. Remember that the one you purchased off eBay, although it had been cleared a programming, was refurbished, which means this has happened at least once before. No one makes new ones so you don't really have a choice.

If it becomes problematic, I would just I'm not sure. Probably junk it because selling it to someone else will be a nightmare when it craps out two blocks after the sale
