What is the easiest way to replace valve seals in a 1997 Saturn SL1
    1.9 ?
Can it be done without removing the head? Toyotas fill the cylinder
with rope to keep the valve from dropping, some compress with air?
What's the easiest method? Anyone done it yet?

Yes. Saturn has a special tool to keep tension on the timing chain while you
remove the cam. If you release tension on the timing chain, the tensioner
will ratchet in and you WILL be taking things apart.
Saturn uses the air compression method.
Paying a Saturn trained mechanic to do it - that's what I did.
