The ones in my '03 Ion looked to be a great design with the hex shaped
pockets all over it.I'm finding out the hexes fill up quickly with
snow/water,then spill down the edge onto the carpet,this is on the seat
side,I really hope Saturn put absorbant material under the rug!.

Put newspapers under the floor mats, and once they are soaked, remove them
when they are frozen, and put new ones down.

There probably is absorbent material under the carpet. It will get
gradually collect salt form your shoes that will never leave and when
the carpet stays wet for weeks every winter you won't need to worry
about the floor after 10 years. It's best to keep carpet clean and dry.
