Disabling airbags for service?

    The owner's manual for the '01 LW300 has a warning about performing any
    service that might trigger the airbags. Can anybody please tell what
    servicing conditions this refers to and how to disarm the airbags during
    service?

    The only concrete warnings written were to keep away from yellow tagged
    wires, yellow connectors and yellow coverings; that these are most likely
    part of the airbag system. Also that the bags can trigger for up to 1 minute
    after ignition is switched off and battery disconnected.

  2. This is likely only necessary for when you are working in close proximity to
    airbag system wiring, or to the inflator modules or sensing/diagnostic
    module (in the center console). These cars don't have any external impact
    sensors that you have to worry about, unless you have side airbags, in which
    case there is a sensor around the door pillar on each side.

    To disable the system, you'd just have to remove the air bag fuse, and then
    disconnect the connector for the inflator modules you're working near, if
    any.

    Also, as you noted, "In the event that ignition positive voltage is lost
    during a collision, the SDM maintains a 23-volt loop reserve (23 VLR) for
    deployment of the air bags. It is important when disabling the SIR system
    for servicing or rescue operations to allow the 23 VLR to dissipate, which
    could take up to 1 minute."

    Good reply. thanks for the info. We just have front airbags and this is my
    first vehicle with them. Last vehicle was an '89 Voyager that just blew the
    motor at 205k miles.
