What is it with these engines eating coils and ignition control modules? Bought this car new. The coil and module were replaced at 56k miles and 108k miles, and now the coil at 126k miles.

She runs strong other than this issue. Just tripped 127k miles. Getting 27 mpg to work and back. Gets 32 mpg on the highway.

If I were you I really wouldn't complain. It could be a lot worse.

Were those OEM parts that failed at 56k and 12x000 k?

Not really complaining more as a wondering why. At 56k it was OEM replacement parts under extended warranty. The last two are my local auto parts. Using my best GoogleFi it appears these are common parts issues across the 2.2 engine series in all GM applications.

I do have a complaint with all the other electric gremlins. Door speakers, door locks, dimmer switch, etc.

I guess someone got the electrical design a little bit off. The coils possibly overheat based on the way they're designed which changes their resistance which changes the current which probably puts stress on the ICM. I've read for other vehicles' engines that the plugs, when they wear down, put the ICM under additional stress that was not accounted for, and long-term it destroys the ICM circuitry. I don't know how the coils on the L car are designed so I can't give you a specific answer, but clearly the parts are being pushed past their design limits. If you do that long enough with anything it will eventually fail. Sorry about the complaining comment. That didn't come out right. I didn't think you were.

I've heard that about the plugs/ICM also. When I did the 108k coil and ICM, I also did plugs, spark plug boots, and valve cover gasket due to leaks at two boots and the drivers front corner. The gasket and boot seals was a PITA lol, The old gal runs mostly really good for only 137 hp.

The ecotec for the L uses AC Delco 41105 iridium plugs. Are you running these? I'm sure they are a rebranded version of some Denso or NGK plug but I don't know which one. S Series plugs use NGK as the OEM. If you aren't using these plugs it would be a nice experiment to switch to them to see if the recurring failures of those parts decrease or disappear.

I will dig out my receipts and check. I typically run OEM plugs in my vehicles.
