I have a 93 saturn sc2. The car drives great and runs well going down the road. However when i press the clutch in when i am fixing to come to a red light etc.. It dies every time. I have done a code check on it and the codes were 23 & 45. I am going to take it in and have the professionals run a diagnostic on it however , before i did that i wanted post here to see if maybe someone else has had this problem and knew exactly what could cause this. I am thinking a fuel mixture problem but i am not sure.

    Thanks in advanced.

Might also be a bad coolant sensor, thinks the engine is cold & gives
too rich a mixture. Has your mileage dropped lately?

Check the wiring under the dash.

I would suspect that the clutch pedal is rubbing against a cable under the
dash. The insulation is probably worn through.

Here is a TSB that could be similar to what you're seeing. It doesn't call
out your year of car, but it's similar in symptoms...

Engine - No Crank/Various Instrument MIL Lights ON

    BULLETIN NO.: 98-T-22

    ISSUE DATE: July, 1998

    GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Electrical-03

    CORPORATION NO.: 887202

    SUBJECT:

Engine will not Crank, MIL and ABS Light On, Park Lamps Inoperative, Fuel
Gauge Inoperative, and/or Radio Speaker Inoperative (Repair Wire Harness)

    MODELS AFFECTED:

1996-1998 Saturns equipped with MP2/MP3 manual transaxles

    CONDITION:

The customer may comment that on occasion, one or more of the following
    conditions may have occurred:

    ^ Engine will not crank

^ Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON lamp) On with
    or without inoperative fuel gauge

^ Anti-lock brake system (ABS) light On

    ^ Park lamps inoperative

One of more of the radio speakers inoperative

    CAUSE

IMPORTANT :The I/P harness contains approximately 100 circuits that are
routed above the clutch pedal. It would be difficult to list all circuits
contained in the harness and their respective failure modes associated with
a short to ground. Based on the manufacturing process of the I/P harness,
and the location of certain circuits in the harness, the circuits listed in
this bulletin have the highest probability of potentially coming into
contact with the clutch pedal pivot bolt/clip.

IMPORTANT :If the vehicle is equipped with an MP2/MP3 transaxle. and a
difficult to diagnose electrical condition exits, inspect the harness above
    the clutch pedal pivot.

The cause of the above conditions may be the Instrument Panel wire harness
coming into contact with the clutch pedal pivot bolt/clip causing a short to
ground on the following circuit (s):

Again, that should only matter when he's trying to start the car.

It depends on which wire of that cable has been damaged. If it's a wire
related to the correct functioning of the ignition or fuel system, it could
happen any time the clutch is pushed in.

We're NOT talking about the starter interlock switch related to pushing in
the clutch - we're talking about the clutch pedal cutting into a bundle of
wires that could be doing almost anything.

    Mr. Hull

As i said in my previous post
    we got two codes 23 & 45
    Both of these said something
    about rich mixture etc..
    Also this would explain
    why my coolant light
    steadily flashes but
my car is not running hot.

    hmmm something to think
    about..

Thank you so much .. i am
going to take it to the
    shop this tuesday 1/13/04
    and let them run diagnostics
on it .. I will let you
guys know what i do or dont find out..
    wish me luck !!

He is used as a generality to mean either he or she, and I had read the
original post a long time ago and didn't remember who the OP was.

    Hey guys

well i took it to the Saturn dealer ..
They replaced a MAT sensor and a Coolant temp sensor.. They said this would cause the car to run rich therefore not being able to hold idle at low speeds..

The flashing coolant resevoir is low light.. we discovered that the whole wire was cut and not even plugged in..

Thank you for all your help .
