2001 SL vs. SL1 question

I bought a new SL in 2001. The only add-ons were A/C and CD Stereo.
The only difference I could find between the SL and the SL1 (with a base
price about $1000 more) was that the SL1 gave you the option to add options.
Now I would have liked to add power windows, doorlocks and cruise control to
my SL for $995 but it wasn't an option as it was on the SL1.
I've had people in my car searching for the window buttons and they laugh
when I point out the crank. Then they laugh again when I tell them to lock
the door before closing it when leaving the car.

My question is this: What is the real difference between the SL and SL1?

    Thanks for any opinions,
    Rick

SL was a very basic model of the S Series. Primarily the SL had only manual
(auto was an option) no pwr anything, base rack and pinion, no power assist
or speed sensitive steering or enhanced suspension like the SL1, radio was
optional, most had radio but no CD or tape. 1.9 engines were all the same in
SL and SL1. Power package and appearance were options on SL.

Cosmetically the SL had dark grey front and rear bumpers. The SL1 and SL2
were color-keyed to the rest of the car.

  4. You hit on most of the major ones. Also, I believe the radio only had
front speakers, and the right side mirror was a $40 option.

    performance wise, they're the same.

Actually, only the SL-2 had color-matched bumpers and door handles.

Ha..The optional right side mirror is a funny one! I didn't think they
still did that!! Back in the day, my sister (who was a college student at
the time) had bought a '80 Chevette that had been ordered bare bones. During
that time you could get it without radio, speakers, side mirror and believe
it or not, the glove compartment door was an option!! It was originally a
fleet car for the local cable company, so that was they way they ordered
them. Thing ran decent for years even after being beat on. Also had a
friend up as a kid that used to screw around and one time dropped a 350
small block (with some obvious mods) into a chevette. Still the scariest
ride I've ever had in a car. (try sitting as a passenger doing 125mph in a
car that should never see that speed even if dropped off a cliff)..Sorry,
memories just coming out about chevettes for some reason. I apologize! :)

When I was in high school (late 80's early '90s), guys would talk about
their 'vettes. eventually, they would admit it was a *che*vette
