1995 SL1 Flasher Relay Location

My two Haynes manuals give the location of the flasher relay (turn signal relay or turn signal hazard switch or hazard warning switch) different from mine. Can someone please tell me where to find it? It's not next to the interior fuse block.

The flasher module is on the back side of the instrument panel junction box. To access it, remove the cover on the lower driver's side of of the center console. You should see it smack in the center.
Kind of obnoxious it is not referenced on the cover to the ipjb.

Thank you Derf for the information. Before this I had many iterations with ChatGPT to find it and finally came to what you mentioned, near the junction box. See attached. Yet I still don't see it. ChatGPT said to feel it with my fingers between the BCM and the junction box. Any additional advice will greatly be appreciated.

I grabbed the attached screenshot from the rich pin video that your picture seemed to lead to. The arrow points to the flasher unit. The caveat is that rich pin was working on a 98 which is the second gen whereas the 95 is the first gen. So they may not be in the same place. It's like 10 degrees where I am but if I try to disassemble any of my 95 SC2, the plastic will break. I have a 95 factory surface manual which I believe I consulted for the location when you originally asked. But I will double check. I might have used an old Chilton's book.

The big orange thing is the chime module. If you don't see the chime module and the flasher unit above it, please let me know, as this means 1st Gen was indeed different. I can sit in my car with the turn signal on and try to trace the sound, but not right now. Let me check the FSM first. The picture is of the bottom front left of the console, the center console with the door removed just like on the right side where you access the fuses for the ipjb. I can't tell what your picture is of but on a second gen it looks like what I've attached.
Apologies for the floundering but in 500,000 MI on two Saturns, I've never had to change the flasher.

Chat GPT is wrong yet again.
S cars did not have bcms until 1999/2000.
Your 95 has no BCM. Maybe that's a picture of the PCM. Don't know. But the area where it is located from a distance should look as it does in my picture, which is why I left it zoomed out for orientation.

AI is really great except when it's wrong. Dead wrong. Most of the S car questions I ask it it gets wrong. It has no clue as to what years had what options etc. I spend more time correcting it than I do finding information.

Hi Derf, thank you for your quick response. Yes, I also saw the YT video, but it is different from my Gen 1. I only see an airbag related yellow connector. The picture I sent you (a junction box with a finned-like structure on top) is also under the dash on the driver side, but it is under the hood-release side instead of the center. Wish someone had made better repair manuals. I might have to get rid of my car if I cannot fix it. It has slightly over 200,000 miles.

My comment about mileage was only for two different vehicles a 95 and a 97. I will try to get a peek at mine when I move it to get it away from the street because of the snow this weekend.

I just went out and looked, turned on my turn signal, and tracked down the clicking relay. It is located exactly where it is indicated in the above picture. From your picture, I can only surmise you are not looking in the correct location.

The instrument panel junction block, where all the fuses inside the vehicle are located, is located on the bottom of the front of the center console down by the carpet. There is a plastic cover that is held on at the back by a little square of Velcro. Pulling this towards the back of the car opens the instrument panel junction box. Fuses and a bunch of relays are all present.

The cover that you removed has a sister on the other side of the bottom of the front console. It is a mirror image of the side with the fuses. Pulling it back exposes a large brightly colored piece of circuitry and I can't remember what it's called, but right above that there is a square relay and that is the one that is the flasher. Please remove the left side cover described above and take a picture and post here. We are clearly not looking at the same thing.

The factory service manual for 1995 confirms the location as I described and as in the above picture.

I finally found the flasher. It indeed is under the center console on the driver side. On my 1995 Saturn SL1 it is covered by TWO panels. I removed the top one (as shown) but cannot (or do not know how to) remove the bottom one. It seems to be screwed so something. I found the flasher by sticking my cell phone camera behind it.

That lower panel pulls off exactly the same way that the cover for the fuses on the other side comes off. One spot of Velcro on the edge closest to the firewall and three plastic hooks that fit in slots on the back Edge. 100% identical setup but mirrored. It's never been taken off so the velcro is very tight, unlike the fuse cover on the right side. Just pull at the front straight out

Hi Derf, you are right. I was able to force the lower panel to come off, after you told me it is safe. Now I see clearly the black flasher similar to what you showed before. Now I have to figure out how to get it out with one hand when there a clip on the side. Space is tight. I don't think I can just pull it out.

I believe it just pulls out. That bracket probably exerts lateral pressure on it so it doesn't move around.

Hi Derf, Knowing it is safe to pull, I was able to take off the lower cover like you said. The inside looks like richpin's video you showed. Space seems tighter than the video for my gen 1. Maybe hard for me to unlock the clip and pull the flasher at the same time with one hand. I haven't tried yet. Derf, thank you very much for all your help.
